Making the most of the light

Today was one of those days that you just had to make the most of the light available.

So I headed down to Walden Pond near Concord, Massachusetts.

Walden Pond is a National Historic Landmark and is considered the birthplace of the conservation movement.

The only colour in a monochromatic landscape I could find today was the occasional leaf still hanging precariously to the branch of a tree.

Birthday Present

People always ask what did you get for your birthday?

Well one present was two model trains from my Mam – They are both Athearn Genesis SD70 MAC model trains in BNSF Heritage 2 livery.

One Moment in Time

Taking a photograph is not about equipment, how old you are or even where you are in the world,

It’s about capturing a specific moment in time and using the light available at that moment to its best effect.

So the photograph above, taken on my birthday using a cheap digital camera, was taken by my 7 year old nephew Max.

He clicked at just the right moment

Another World Away

I am now another world away in Lexington, Massachusetts, USA.

Just outside Lexington is the Battle Road, with its connections to the start of the American Revolution and along side it the famous Hartwell Tavern, a restored 18th-century tavern.

The tavern dates from 1775 and is one of a hand full of buildings that remain from this era.

Today’s picture is a timeless view taken whilst the snow is still on the ground.

Iceland - in just two hours

I had a 4 hour lay over in Iceland today, en route to the USA.

As we came into land it was clear that the weather was great with plenty of winter sun and crisp blue skis

So I persuaded a taxi driver to take me on a quick two hour trip around some of the local sights.

The fishing boats are in the harbour at Hafnir, the church is one of the oldest on the island and the Blue Lagoon is easily the most photographed site in all of Iceland.

Time to escape

On Friday I am booked to fly from Glasgow to Boston at 11:00am.

Normally I would get up early and drive, which takes around three hours.

I the light of the snow that had already fallen and the forecasted snow that was still to come, I tried to escape today

When I left I discovered some roads still closed with snow drifting from hedgerow to hedgerow.

I found a recently ploughed road and headed for the A66 which is one of the main east west routes across the Pennines.

I needed to get across to the west and pick up the M6 and M74 to Glasgow.

This road, as you can see from the photographs, was closed, so I turned round and went the long way round via Scotch Corner, Newcastle and Carlisle.

A three hour journey took 6 hours but at least I am now at the airport, in a hotel and ready for tomorrow’s flight.

And I got to take some pictures!

Snow hits the East Coast

As snow continues to fall along the East Coast of England the Met Office is saying it is the most snow some areas have seen in years.

Here in Stockton on Tees we awoke to a landscape transformed by the overnight snow.

Even as I write the snow is continuing to fall

Accident, A1, North Yorkshire

Whenever I am on the road I always listen to Radio Five Live to keep in touch with the travel news.

So I already knew of the problems on the A1 in North Yorkshire and steered well clear of it.

Instead I found an over bridge on a local back road to take some pictures of the chaos.

The long queue on the south bound carriageway was caused by drivers looking at the accident rather than concentrating on their driving

Staithes, North Yorkshire, England

Today was my first ever visit to the fishing village of Staithes which is famous for its associations with Captain Cook.

The little harbour, colourful fishing boats and higgledy-piggledy cottages with red pan tiled roofs is very photogenic

I always enjoy visiting the North Yorkshire fishing town of Whitby.

The harbour, fishing boats, lobster pots and white painted houses provide a wide range of subjects to photograph.

Wedding Flowers

I visited South Wales today to be official photographer at the wedding of my friends Steve and Helen’s daughter Sarah to Tanyo.

We all had a great day and the wedding pictures weren’t too bad either.

Snowdonia in the rain

Another challenging day, photographically speaking, with little in the way of light.

It was actually raining when I took this picture in the spectacular Llanberis Pass near Snowdon, North Wales.

I hope this inspires you to take your camera out with you …what ever the weather.

Concorde G-BOAC

Today I paid my first ever visit to the excellent aviation viewing park at Manchester Airport, the UK's third busiest airport.

Manchester Airport is the proud host of Concorde G-BOAC which is displayed on a bespoke replica runway.

On 19 December 1985, G-BOAC travelled at 1,488 mph, the highest recorded ground speed for a commercial airliner
