Fire in Darlington

This is what happens when 500 tones of waste timber and wooden pallets catches on fire to create one of the biggest blazes the town's firefighters have tackled during the past year.

The flames from the fire on the Alliance Industrial Estate, Darlington, raged across a two-acre site and the towering column of smoke could be seen for miles around.

When I took these images the fire had been burning for more than 5 hours.

Isle of Skye – Day Five

A window of opportunity existed this morning before another band of heavy rain passed over sky.

So I returned to photograph Bride's Veil waterfall again.

Yes I was actually stood in the stream and waterfall with my tripod.

Isle of Skye – Day Three

Day Three brings a combination of rain and snow melt.

So it was an ideal day to go out photographing waterfalls.

Having reviewed the day’s images I plan to re-visit one location again as I am so pleased with today’s images.

Isle of Skye – Day Two

Day Two brings high cloud and diffused sunlight so I had to work hard to make the most of what little light was available.

Fortunately the whole island is one huge photographic opportunity.

Isle of Skye – Day One

The first day on the Isle of Skye has been incredible.

I awoke to overnight snow and heavy grey skies.

Then the weather broke and the sun came.

Then just when you thought everything was settled a blizzard would sweep in of the sea.

I photographed the ferry at Uig arrive in a blizzard and depart in sunshine.

Loch Linnhe, Ballachulish, Scotland

It was a beautiful early spring day today as I drove north en route to the Isle of Skye, Scotland.

So I could not resist stopping to take this view of Loch Linnhe, as seen from Ballachulish.

The Armadillo

So last night I flew home to the UK from Boston via Iceland to Glasgow.

And despite the lack of sleep I noticed the light on the SECC as I drove over the River Clyde and just had to find somewhere to park to take a few shots.

The building is affectionately known by Glasweigans as the Armadillo.

Tight Fit

If you always have your camera close by then you are ready for anything

Here are the guys from the Lexington Fire Department reversing their 105-foot E-One Aerial Ladder Truck into the Fire House.

It is a very tight fit

Moving Car

So it’s rained all day today and then at around 3pm the rain turned to freezing snow.

So by 5pm the light was fading fast, the traffic was moving very slow and I decided to try and take some pictures!

I used a 1 second shutter speed and shot from a moving car.

Boston Skyline

To take a shot like the one above requires planning, time and a tripod.

I drove into Boston at 10:00am this morning to prepare and plan to take this image which I did at 6:00pm this evening

As I was unable to park near the location I travelled via the Boston Harbour to Logan Airport Water Taxi.

In between whiles I also managed to amuse my self taking pictures in Downtown Boston.

Tree Silhouette

Conventional wisdom says you should not shoot into the sun.

Well this shot is straight into the sun!

The trick is to use the trunk of the tree to hide the sun.

Vermont in the Winter

It is normal for people to flock to Vermont in the Fall for all the Fall colour.

Well today I visited it whilst the state was still in the grip of winter.

As you can see the red barns and covered bridges look great whatever the season.

New Hampshire in the WInter

It was very very cold but sunny today in the White Mountains of New Hampshire - 5F wind chill - that’s -22c

So the challenge was to make sure the photographer didn’t get frost bite and the camera carried on working despite the cold.

Fortunately I managed to pull it of.

Well Cool

Well this is the well coolest places, in more ways than one, at which I have found Wi-Fi Access and been able to post to the Blog.

It’s the Mount Washington Cog Railway in New Hampshire, USA.

Being Out There

I get a lot of people asking how do you take such great pictures?

Well one of the secrets is you just have to be out there.

All the pictures I have taken today in New Hampshire, USA, show what is possible if you take your camera with you.

After the Snow Storm

Around 10 inches of snow fell last night in Lexington, Massachusetts as a winter storm moved up the east coast of America. So far this winter the area has had 107 inches of snow.

So today the challenge was to take some pictures after the storm but before the sun came out

In fact the sun never really came out all day so it was once again a case of making the most of the light available.
