Last Picture of 2004

And for the final picture of 2004 a new view of the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge.

Normally I take pictures of the bridge from the other side of the river.

The Shortest day

December 21st is a special day. In the Northern hemisphere it’s the shortest day and in the southern hemisphere it’s the longest day

To celebrate this unique day in a special way we have created a photographic record of the day.

On the BLOG we feature just 6 images but on the FreeFoto.com website you can view all 441 images

Everything from the first exposure at 07:55 this morning, half an hour before Sunrise (8:25 GMT) to the last frame taken 20 minutes after Sunset (15:41 GMT)

You get to see the best and the worst. The ones that work and the ones that don’t. You can explore how we use the light and the subject to create our images. You see what happens when we get it wrong. You also will see what we do when the sun goes in!

We hope you enjoy this special feature on The Shortest day.

4:02pm Last Exposure

I had given up by this stage and was walking back to the car. I was absolutely frozen.

Then I spotted this fisherman walk out onto the end of this little jetty

He was fly fishing so I had to time the exposure for the least movement as I was down to a ½ second exposure.

Not Bad for the last shot of the day

2:26pm Old Engine

By now a bank of cloud had rolled in and I was looking for things to photograph that did not involve having the sky in the frame

This old engine at Grosmont Engine caught my eye

The big challenge was holding the camera steady for a 1/30 second exposure

07:55am First Exposure – Oil Refinery, Teesmouth

My first job was to get as far east as I could to take a picture of the Sunrise over the sea.

Arriving with plenty of time to spare, I was able to take a picture of the Oil Refinery at Teesmouth as well.

Ullswater in December

Today is the day before the shortest day so I planned to spend the day in the office before spending tomorrow out taking pictures.

Well by Lunchtime that plan had gone out of the window and I headed to Ullswater in the English Lake District.

I had checked out a local webcam and when I saw the dusting of snow I decided to hit the road before it melted.

Sunrise

This picture was a case of trying to make the best of a poor situation.

The sunrise this morning looked great but the area I was in did not lend it-self to photography.

So I choose to just focus on the sky.

Stone Wall

With just a week to go to the shortest day the sun is low in the sky all day here in the United Kingdom … when it is not cloudy.

So this west facing stone wall has a lovely golden glow as it is lit by the winter sunlight.
