Sunshine and Showers

30th June 2004

Today has been a day of sunshine and showers so it came as no surprise when there was plenty of what photographers call storm lighting this evening.

So this evening I headed out to make the most of the unusual light.

I came back with a memory card full of images

This view of a tree sidelight by the sun whilst a large grey cloud moves behind it is typical of the images I took this evening

I used a tripod to keep the image sharp and a 170 – 500 Sigma zoom lens to compress the image

A little bit of Sun

Photography today required patience as there was more cloud than sun.

The pictures above show the difference a little bit of sunlight makes.

Uo Close

It was back to the Grand Union Canal today to get up close.

I was in search of the little features that make each canal boat different.

This hand decorated bucket filled with flowers was just the kind of colourful feature I was looking for.

Foxton Staircase

This evening I visited Foxton Staircase on the Grand Union Canal near Market Harborough. The series of ten locks is a remarkable feat of engineering and raises the level of the canal by 75ft.

The challenge photographically is to try and capture scale of the staircase of locks.

I have achieved that by using a tripod, slow shutter speed and a small aperture.

Look and Feel

Just contrast this picture with the one taken on the 3rd June.

Same place, same exposure, but different light.

The end result has a totally different look and feel.

Breaking the rules

This picture looks like it could have been taken anywhere in the Middle East.

Yet it was taken today in Spain.

You can also see I have broken one of the rules of photography by taking a picture at mid day.

I have waited till the sun went behind a little bit of cloud to diffuse the light and used the distant hillside to keep the sky out of the frame.

North South East or West ?

When you have found something you would like to photograph it’s always handy to know which way it is facing. North South East or West.

This bell tower in the village of Montoro is facing West so you can see the picture that works best is the middle one taken during the afternoon.

I have also been very careful with the exposure to keep the saturated blue sky and not wash it out by over exposing it.

Modern Art

If you ever get the chance it is always enjoyable just to wander around with your camera.
I spent a pleasant few hours today exploring the town of Montoro looking for interesting things to photograph.

This picture is a close up of some paint peeling of a wall.

As a texture it works for me – could even be a piece of modern art.

Sunflowers

I was expecting to be taking pictures of Olive trees and Vineyards as I travelled around the region of Cordoba, Spain.

What I didn’t expect was fields of Sunflowers!

Blue sky and Sunflowers are always a great combination to photograph.

Above are three different views of the same Sunflowers.

Montoro in the Twilight

With the increase in Airline security I decided on this trip not to pack a camera tripod in my suitcase.

Instead I packed my bean bag which has a screw attachment to allow me to fasten it to my camera.

So this 2 second exposure is taken with the camera attached to a bean bag and then carefully balanced on the balcony.

I then used the camera timer to fire the shutter

The light changed very fast but I did get one frame I was happy with.

Balcony in Spain

I woke this morning and stepped out onto the balcony in Spain to enjoy the gentle cool breezy.

It was just 24 degrees Celsius on the thermometer but by lunchtime it was up to 35.

My friends Dave and Christine have lived in the village of Montoro, which is in the region of Cordoba, Spain, for a number of years.

The light is too harsh and it’s too hot to go out in the middle of the day so I will be trying to make the most of the morning and evening light.
