This picture required a tripod, slow shutter speed and an umbrella.
Despite the rain the saturated colours of the leaves in the village of Melsonby, North Yorkshire, make for a pleasant autumn scene.

St. Hilda's Church, Caldwell, North Yorkshire
The key to this image is where the sun is in relation to the scene.
The church is well light but also the sun is shining thru the leaves.
Having the gravestones in shadow also holds the bottom of the frame together.

Tree Shadow
I like this tree that I noticed today. The challenge was what to do with it
In the end I decided to try and make something interesting using the shadow of the tree on the newly sown field.

Cathedral & Abbey Church of St Alban
Below you can see what happens when you have no light.
And above you can see what happens when the sun shines.
The difference is dramatic!
The light is coming from the west and its about 90 minutes before sunset.

Something a little different
So on Saturday I drove 240 miles thru the rain to Saint Albans in Hertfordshire.
And when it came to take pictures of Sunday morning it was cloudy, overcast and generally not good.
As you can see above photography was not straight forward.
So I went for something a little different instead.
I spotted this aluminium coffee table in an open air café in the town centre.
All I need to do was find a nice leaf. Bingo.

Sun makes brief visit
The sun came out unexpectedly and very briefly this morning.
The forecast is for more rain to sweep across the country.
So I grabbed the camera, car keys and cell phone and headed out in search of local autumn colour.
I managed a set of images of this lovely tree before the sun disappeared!

The best I could come up with
One thing you learn early on as a photographer is you have no control over the weather.
It was a lovely autumn day today but I didn’t get chance to get out of the office to enjoy it till an hour before sunset.
At that point a bank of cloud rolled in from the west and the sun promptly disappeared behind it.
So this was the best I could come up with

Brick Train Sculpture
17th October 2004
I drive past the Brick Train Sculpture near Darlington, County Durham, at least once a week and I have already taken a number of pictures.
But tonight, illuminated by artificial lights and with a little bit of light left in the sky, I managed to take this dramatic view.

Sunrise
Sometimes you need to take a picture because you think you might be able to take another picture in the future.
These two trees at Sunrise this morning are a case in point.
Having discovered this location I am going to return in December to photograph them in the frost, mist and snow. I’ll let you know how I get on.

Old Farm Gate
Metcheck.com, which gives long range seasonal forecasts, is now advising the United Kingdom to prepare for a cold snap as computer models now indicate the UK can expect a colder than average Winter this year.
Metcheck.com's forecast has already led to bookmakers cutting their odds on a White Christmas to 6/1.
Meanwhile back in the real world I have had a number of attempts at photographing this old gate. At last today I managed to get something I liked.
